CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES DURING 2005-2006

Chemistry Department has organised a number of programs for the overall development of the students with the guidance of the faculty members.

LIST OF OUR ACTIVITIES:

(1) Lab on wheels: In this program we move our chemistry lab to the schools in and around Vijayawada. First a group of our students will go to the school and consult the corresponding authorities and collect the list of experiments they want us to demonstrate and clarifications needed in theory for their students. After that, a group of students will go to that school with the required equipment and will explain them through demonstration. In this exercise one or two members of our faculty will accompany them to monitor the activity, but the actual demonstration and explanation part will be by students only.

Through this unique activity they have developed the following.

communication skillsorganising skills, leader ship qualities, self confidence to do things andto take right decisions, andwiping the inferiority complex.

As a result of this experience Some of the economically weak students started giving home tuitions and earning money to pay their college fees and books. This relieved their parents to some extent from financial stress.

(2)SOCIAL AWARENESS THROUGH WATER ANALYSIS:

This year we started this program. As all of us know the root cause for most of the diseases is drinking polluted water. We want to educate the people especially those living in slums the need to drink pure water. A group of our students will go to near by villages or slum areas in the town. In front of the people they analyse the following parameters in water, and suggest them precautionary methods that can be followed by them easily(a) Total dissolved salts- this should not exceed 1000ppm (b) Electrolytes in water- comparison with pure water (c) Detection of ions like Mg+2,Ca+2, Fe+3, NH4+, Cl,F,SO42-,HCO3,ions in water. (d) Acidic nature of water using PH meter.

It is only a humble beginning; this exercise will add detection of some more parametersin the coming years.

(3)SOCIAL AWARENESS THROUGH MILK ANALYSIS:

This year we started this program. Drinking contaminated milk and consuming such milk products will cause health hazards. A group of our students will go to near by villages or slum areas in the town. In front of the people they analyse the following parameters in milk. (a) Bacterial content detection through Bromo thymol blue test. (b) Detection of adulterants in milk like bicarbonates, borates, hydrogen peroxide which the vender will add to milk for preventing clot on boiling, but they are harmful to the consumer.

It is only a humble beginning; this exercise will add detection of some more parameters in the coming years.

When we are doing the above two activities in front of the people the feed back we got gave us immense satisfaction. They are very happy with this activity and most of them requested us to come as many times as possible and they also started taking the precautionary measures suggested by us. We observed this made lot of impact on children in those houses. We can proudly say that this reminded us our responsibility to bring social awareness and improve hygiene.

problems. It gaveour students an opportunity to understand the situation of the people in slum areas, their struggles to make the two ends meet.

(4) QUIZ FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN:

This year we organized an international level written quiz for the school children for the first time in vijayawada. We did this activity in collaboration with Australian chemical society. We got this offer even in previous years but we could not do it due to various reasons. Nearly 400 school children participated in this test. We involved the students to the maximum extent in the organization. The interaction with school authorities, school children, their parents, and the feed back by them helped them to develop organising skills and to improve communication skills.

We are proud to say that our coordinator Sri.M.V.Sunand kumar was awarded as the Best coordinator in India by the Austrilian chemical society.

(5)INDUSTRIAL TOUR:

Our association organized an industrial tour to visakhapatnamduring the last year and this year also.

(6)VISIT TO INDUSTRIES:

We organized visits to nearby industries 3 steel factories, a pharmaceutical industry and to vuyyur sugar factory. These activities helped us very much to develop companionship and are an eye opener for us to differentiate between theory and actual practice.

NATIONAL LEVEL QUIZ FOR STUDENTS

ORGANISED BY

CHEMISTRY ASSOCIATION OF

ANDHRALOYOLACOLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS)

A MEMORABLE QUIZ

The 4-day national level quiz in Chemistry organized by the Chemistry Association of AndhraLoyolaCollege (Autonomous), from November 26th to 29th 2005 was a noteworthy intellectual exercise and the second consequent national level quiz ever conducted in the college. It proves that the college winning the CPE (College with Potential for Excellence) status is justified. It is a testimony to the relentless march the college was making towards the avowed destination of ‘Centre of Excellence’.

The participants were quizzed in four branches of the discipline of Chemistry: Organic, Inorganic, Physical, and general. The innovative lecturers of the Department acted as quiz masters, using 1200 slides and aids such as adobe premier, photoshop, flash and power point. In the preliminary rounds, in each branch there are chapter selection rounds, Buzzer rounds which made the battle a tough one. 44 colleges from all over the country took part in the event. That includes teams from Tamilnadu, Karnataka etc. the participants were divided into four batches and four preliminary rounds were conducted. From each preliminary round two best were selected and the eight finalists competed in finals. The visual experiment based questions, puzzle solving questions in particular were very engaging and now the applause of the audience during the finals. Finals were conducted in Devaiah Memorial Auditorium. Each team contested with rare spirit and enthusiasm and the mood was upbeat throughout the four days.

The team from NizalingappaCollege, Bangalore won the first Prize, and the second Prize went toA.G. &S.G.SiddharthaDegreeCollege, Vuyyuru. The HinduCollege Machilipatnam carried away the third Prize. The 1st& 2nd Prizes were given away by Rev.Fr.Dr.S.Emmanuel,S.J.Principal,and the 3rd prize was given by Rev.Fr.L.Joji,S.J Vice principal(inter). For the first three places rolling shields are awarded. Every finalist was awarded with a merit certificate and an individual momento.

“The quiz was a tough battle. The questions based on visual experimental and puzzle solving rounds, in particular, led us to think three dimensionally. “A wonderful experience, indeed!” said the winners of the first Prize. He also said that loyolites are lucky to have such innovative chemistry teachers and he also added that he learnt a lot from the students of chemistry association. Every participant appreciated the well organized behavior, wonderful hospitality and the affection of the students.

The quiz drew enthusiastic appreciation from one and all. Behind the success lay the three months long trial of the 16 lecturers of the Chemistry Department under the leadership of Mr. K.V.A.Rama Sastry(H.O.D) and the entire Chemistry Association led by Mr M.Vijaya Sunand Kumar(staff co-ordinator),Mr.V.Y.Rajesh Gupta(student chairman),Mr.M.Kiran Babu(college student co-ordinator).

The following methods adopted in organising the National Llevel Quiz in Chemistry helped for the overall growth of the students.

(a) Students collected the data of the reputed colleges in the country by studying their profile in the internet. It helped the students to know about the various activities that are happening in the colleges of their standard. It opened new thinking and also made them to plan their future.

(f) The students conducted all the proceedings during the quiz like registration, allotment of sequence to the teams, display of scores, announcing the rounds and the details of the rounds, perfect maintenance of the time during buzzer rounds The quizzing part is the only activity they left for the teachers. This enabled them to organise their thoughts and to put them in a presentable manner. They acted as the master of ceremonies for the inaugural as well as prize distribution functions and got the applause of one and all.

(g)Our students did not hesitate even to do the manual work also for helping the arrangements and to attend the needs of the participants. It is a testimony for their belief in dignity of labour.
